We will be holding our annual Garden Party, celebrating our recent election win, on the evening of Saturday the 12th of June from 7.30 pm until about 10pm in the Cloister Court Gardens of Sidney Sussex College. For the same ticket price as last year we will be providing drinks and a BBQ as well as a live band! The Garden Party provides a fantastic opportunity to meet up with friends from the election, as well as our new MP Julian Huppert, local party members and alumni. All are welcome to attend. David Howarth MP visits the Christ’s Politics Society- Monday 15/2/2010

Come to Christ’s College’s Lloyd Room at 21.15 to hear David Howarth,
Liberal Democrat MP for Cambridge and a respected law academic, give a talk
to the Christ’s Politics Society.

Mr Howarth was first elected City Councillor for Castle Ward in 1987 and
became leader of the City Council in 2000. He became an MP in the 2005
election and was recently described as an “angel” by the Guardian for having
never claimed a penny in second home allowances despite travelling 60 miles
from Cambridge to Westminster.

The talk will be based around Mr Howarth’s reflections on his time as an MP
and how it compares to a life in academia. A question and answer session
will follow.

On the 25th of February Nick Clegg, leader of the Liberal Democrats, will be coming to Cambridge for a student Q and A session!

The venue is as of yet unconfirmed but keep checking as it will be up soon.

Cambridge Student Liberal Democrats are planning to hold many brilliant events throughout the Michaelmas 2009 term. The term will start with out Free Freshers’ Squash on Monday the 12th October starting at 6pm in the Bateman Room of Gonville and Caius College. Come to get some free drinks and find out more about CSLD, the most active political society in Cambridge. Don’t forget to bring a cheque-book or some cash so you can join our society when you get there! Alternatively, join online today!

After the squash we’re holding plenty of debates including one with the Tories about education, and there will be plenty of chances to talk politics at the Cross Party Drinks later in the term. You’ll also get free entry to our film evening to watch Taking Liberties with Cambridge NO2ID.

The CSLD Student debt campaign that resulted in the shocking findings seen in the video made (see earlier post) has been closed with a photo shoot with cambridge MP David Howarth on the steps of the Senate House.

On 10th March 2009, a small group of students went round the University of Cambridge asking students if they would be happy sharing with us their level of student debt.

These were the, quite shocking, results!

As Liberals, we think that education should be a right, not a privilege.
