Dom WeldonChair E-mail: College: Sidney Sussex Subject: 1st year Natural Sciences (Biological) I joined the Liberal Democrats because… I want to see a freer, fairer Britain. I believe that people in society must respect the opinions of others, whilst being free - and encouraged - to put their own across. A liberal nation must inform and guide those in it, whilst leaving them free to make their own mistakes. Government should protect and provide for its citizens, whilst leaving them free to live the life they choose without fear of interference. Today, in Britain only the Liberal Democrats campaign for ‘freedom from poverty, ignorance or conformity.’ This is why I am a Liberal Democrat. If I could pass one law, it would be… to make it a criminal offence for the police to retain the biometric data of arrested individuals who were subsequently released without charge. Today thousands of innocent individuals are treated like criminals by having their DNA and fingerprints retained in a database for no reason. No individual should have something so personal about them held by a government without a very good reason, and for innocent individuals, the police don’t have one. |

Catherine GregoryEvents Officer Email: I joined the Liberal Democrats… I believe in a fair and meritocratic society, with opportunities for all, regardless of age, class and ethnicity. The Liberal Democrats offer a vision of hope, liberty and optimism for the future, and I believe we need a party that inspires trust and confidence in these difficult times. If I could pass one law, it would be… Reform of the welfare state in Britain, with care going to those most in need, who are the most vulnerable in society. Today there is too much negativity surrounding the NHS, the benefit system and social services, and thus I believe that we need enlightened liberal policies to inspire confidence and truly make a difference. |

Gary HorlockGeneral Executive Member I joined the Liberal Democrats because… a friend persuaded me too. Although on reflection I agree with the party’s principles even if I do not always agree with the way that these principles are translated into policy. I believe in a free, fair and open society: I believe that everybody should be treated equally and given the same opportunities and I believe in the protection of civil liberties. I agree with the idea that nobody should be enslaved by poverty, ignorance or conformity. The government should help people financially and it should educate them but it should also allow them to be themselves and not interfere where it is not needed. I think that the best government is the one that can combine liberty, equality and community. But socialism puts too much emphasis on community and conservatism puts too much emphasis on the freedom of the individual. The Liberal Democrats strive to balance these important values and that is why I support them even if it is not why I joined them in the first place.
If I could pass one law it would be… a law to instate myself as supreme leader of the Universe. However, no government should ever have the power to pass such a law. Perhaps a more achievable dream would be a British Constitution that sets out (and restricts) the powers of the government; enshrines a set of rights (which should not be seen as exhaustive); separates the executive from Parliament; changes the House of Lords into a Senate elected by proportional representation; removes the legislative powers of the Crown without abolishing it; clarifies the powers of the devolved bodies and our role in Europe and finally, requires that they construct a new Parliament building which should be round and have adequate seating to encourage cooperation in politics rather than confrontation. |
